Mustard Steak Marinade – The ingredients are simple and the outcome is fantastic!  This delicious marinade worked beautifully to tenderize the steak while giving it a wonderful flavor to boot.

Mustard Steak Marinade

We had a day today where the temperature went up into the 50’s. Ok, yeah it rained but this one day was a reminder that more nice days are to come. This one nice day got me thinking about grilling. I had a sirloin steak in the refrigerator and wanted to do something different with it, while at the same time using what I had on hand to do it. Mustard Steak Marinade was perfect!  The ingredients were simple and the outcome was fantastic!  The marinade worked beautifully to tenderize the steak while giving it a wonderful flavor to boot. We’re going to make this incredible Mustard Steak Marinade together so let’s gather the ingredients.

Mustard STeak Mariande

Mustard Steak Marinade Ingredients:

We start the recipe by making the marinade first and refrigerating it until we’re ready to use it.  Place the marinade ingredients into a medium bowl.

  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 finely chopped garlic clove (you can also just mince it)
  • 1 Tablespoon brown sugar or honey
  • 1 Teaspoon each salt and pepper

Mix the ingredients together until they are well combined, place the marinade in the refrigerator until your ready to use it.

We start marinading the steaks by placing them on a clean surface. Poke holes in the steak using a fork. Flip the steak over and repeat poking holes in the steak on the other side. Place the steak in a shallow glass baking dish along with the soy sauce. Flip the steak over a few times so both sides are coated with soy sauce. Let the steak sit in the soy sauce for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes take the steak out of the soy sauce. Throw any soy sauce in the dish away. Place the Mustard Steak Marinade on both sides of the steak. I just use a knife to smear it on every inch of both sides of the steak. Refrigerate the steak for at least 45 minutes before grilling it.

The marinade recipe “as is” will definitely coat both sides of two steaks without a problem. If you have any more than that, I’d suggest just making a double or triple batch to coat both sides of 4 – 6 steaks.I don’t skimp on the marinade, I slather both sides of the steak liberally.  I’ve made this marinade to coat round steaks, strip steaks and T-bones. The flavor Mustard Steak Marinade gives to steak is incredible. My husband doesn’t even want steak with out it anymore. I use Mustard Steak Marinade all year round. I have a cast iron grill pan that works beautifully to grill indoors during the Winter months and of course when the weather allows we fire up the grill during Spring and Summer.

Marinating meats is a wonderful way to add lots of flavor to our meals all year round but there are some very important guidelines we need to follow when we marinade.

  • Throw away any marinade that meat has marinaded in. A marinade that has come in contact with raw meat can have harmful bacteria in it.
  • Any marinade containing salt, acid or alcohol should only be used to marinade meat for 4 hours or less. Any longer than that and the marinade will start to chemically “cook” the meat it’s sitting in.
  • Never marinade meat in a metal container such as a bowl or pan. The acidity in the marinade can react to the metal. Always use glass bowls, glass containers or resealable plastic bags

Now that we know some very important “don’ts” about marinading, let’s “do” get in the kitchen and make this delicious Mustard Steak Marinade, ENJOY!
